The torch beam

illuminates little

of the path

to the old garage.

I tentatively

make my way

through the sodden leaves

and up the

treacherous worn steps,

I watch for

signs of any slugs –

although they are not

my favourite creatures,

I don’t want

to make their lives more

on this joyless evening.

The garage is dark;

cobwebs trail

from my face and hand

as I open the door

and step into

the relative dry

of a dripping shelter.

I can feel

a hundred tiny

insect eyes

peering at me.

I quickly open

the chest freezer, grasp

the bread and leave them

to their feasting.

Daylight Moon

It’s not dark,
yet a silvered lemon-slice moon
hangs in the sky
waiting to float
on a sea of midnight dreams –
morning will come soon enough;
dousing us with
its daylight reality.

Headlights drive close behind me. Suddenly they veer right and a white Clio overtakes in the narrow winding lane, letting off a long horn blast as it does. A little incensed by the reckless stupidity of the driver, I impetuously return the hoot. Immediately the car stops in front and sits there menacingly in the blackness of the late evening.

For what seems like an eternity, my breath is held; I wait for the car door to open. My headlights are still on full beam – forgotten in the speed of the moment. I flick the lever and they dip. A long, long second or two later and the car roars off into the night. Shaken, I continue on my way and around every corner I almost expect to see the car imbedded in a hedge.

I make sure that on the return journey I face my demons and drive back by the same route.

A lighthearted look at life on any given day

Art is our home. This door is open, always, to all, and yet permits not the entry of draft or rain. The doused may find solace, and repose, in the warmth of this hearth. For the sparks of these words - the spectres conjured by its incandescence - are a family whose love is unconditional, and will ever blaze, kindling within us the faith to weather these tempests. The ashes may then be scattered upon the winds - to ignite the lost, and unify our souls as one, in unquenched illumination; to be the light which guides us home, through the darkest of eclipse.
