In Court

“Anyone for tennis?”

The grass smells sweetly of lawnmowers and sunshine but the ‘mountain’ goats hungrily eye the balls flying their way. Children squeal and race up and down the courts while the small green spheres hurtle around as if fired from a cannon. Daniel sees my return approaching and ducks.

“Oh he of little faith.”

I think that my aim improves by the week…Wimbledon here I come!

The after show party

Post adrenaline-rush fatigue has set in and small bodies lie scattered around the closed bar. Some still have their make-up on and quite a few heads are back-combed candyfloss. A couple have overdosed on a secret stash of e-numbers and leap up and down in manic glee. The adults have spent the energy needed to chastise them and, for once, they are allowed to prance about unchecked. A long day stretches out behind us and a short night in front but all worth it to see their faces illuminated with that special after-performance glow – discernible even in the waiting gloom of the wings.

Gaining Pounds

The nice ones might say, “No, I don’t need help, thank you very much, but I will give you some money for your collection.” The children smile and respond with a polite, “Thank you.” Then they wait patiently for their next…potential customer.

You can understand really, we adults do hover but occasionally a packet of biscuits needs rearranging from underneath a multipack of baked beans.

It soon dawns and I share the knowledge – the ones most likely to take them up on their offer are the harassed single parents with a toddler trying to climb out of the trolley. They look so relieved and hand them the bags thankfully while simultaneously grabbing a stray leg emerging from the depths of the wire cage. Gratitude sometimes comes in the form of some loose change, other times it’s an apologetic smile of thanks. The bag-packers don’t seem to mind too much. They feel grown up.

All in all it’s a good afternoon’s work. They do a little dance, everyone claps and we go home £150 heavier… | Slimming World Recipes & More

A lighthearted look at life on any given day

Art is our home. This door is open, always, to all, and yet permits not the entry of draft or rain. The doused may find solace, and repose, in the warmth of this hearth. For the sparks of these words - the spectres conjured by its incandescence - are a family whose love is unconditional, and will ever blaze, kindling within us the faith to weather these tempests. The ashes may then be scattered upon the winds - to ignite the lost, and unify our souls as one, in unquenched illumination; to be the light which guides us home, through the darkest of eclipse.
